Anything, other than jewelry, than a person can wear to increase his defense rating is considered armour. This includes things like helmets, shoulder armour, leather vests, chain shirts, bracers, gloves, greaves, boots, and even cloaks. It is not possible to wear all these kinds of armor at the same time, but this should illustrate the range of armours and styles available.
