Orl is a Free Lancer. He typically operated along the Elenstroem from his home in Menlad Crossing, but was hired by Albrecht to stage a campaign of subdued terror in the area around Erinsford. He works in collaboration with his cousin Thorn, also from Menlad, and Nebrin, Reylyr, and Soko, all residents of Waste's Edge. Orl and Thorn hired on with Alek Endhelm after Albrecht gave ground-level control of all brigandry to Endhelm.

Orl is a tracker and hunter who spent much of his young life in the southlands of what was once Aereng. He knows more than any of the other Men of the Knife about the Forestkeepers and the other groups that wander watchfully through the old forests of the world. Orl is not a member of the Society of the Blade, since he will not repudiate his membership in the Free Lancers, but he is appreciated for his knowledge and skills. He carries a copper coin from Menlad Crossing as his mark. He is skilled in melee combat, has a rank in ranged combat, and has some knowledge of herbs and poultices.

Thorn works directly for Elgar Basil as a dockhand. He is also a Free Lancer. Thorn is more evil than his cousin Orl. He is also stronger and more fond of confrontation. He is a melee fighter exclusively, though of course he has some skills as a tracker and hunter. He also has some knowledge of herbal poisons. More often, he just gets his poisons from Reylyr. He tends to start any fight by trying to strike with a poisoned dagger before switching to a heavy mace and beating his opponents to a bloody pulp. He carries an Erinsford copper as his mark.

Orl and Thorn are the two brigands who waylaid the Dragonhunter.
