Padrig was understanding, good, and brave by temperment. Merigan is certainly less patient and would have castigated Marcella for leaving, even if leaving was the only trouble. With grief stacked on grief, she is not prepared to be gentle or lenient with Marcella. However, she does not think Marcella robbed or killed her beloved. In the midst of her thorough dressing-down for running off like a brat and disappointing Padrig so thoroughly, she delivers the message about Albrecht - He is not what he seems. Be wary. - and the rather angry challenge that Marcella redeem herself, though she's probably too lazy to make it as an apothecary. Her piece said, she disappears into the wild, no longer trusting of human civilization. She retreats beyond her means to survive and is rescued by the Yetins. As it stood, her knowledge of herbs, her goodness of soul, and her overwhelming grief work in her favor. She is taken in and begins to heal, but is killed when the thugs assault the monastery. Her body is one of those found. Thus, when Marcella learns that her strangely disconnected quests all center in Albrecht, murderer of her teacher, his lover, and others, the death of Albrecht may become an end in itself. He may seem too evil to be allowed to live.
