The leather vest is a very common kind of chest armour and is available for use by all races and most classes. A leather vest should not be confused with leather armour.

The most basic leather vest is simply one or two layers of tanned animal hide stitched together into a garment. Some rangers wear these as much for clothing as for armour. Usually, if the vest still has fur on it, it is clothing first and armour second.

A single layer of leather, if worn over other clothing, is considered armour and is referred to as a simple leather vest. All classes and races can weather simple leather vests.

A double-layered vest, if stitched together with thread, is considered a heavy leather vest. All classes and races can wear heavy leather vests.

Improved leather vests are constructed in a variety of ways, including attaching layers of leather to each other with metal studs and sandwiching ring mail with layers of tanned leather. Classes or characters with restrictions on wearing metallic armours cannot wear improved leather vests. This specifically precludes monastic characters, but does not disallow lawless characters from wearing these 'quiet' armours.
