Shields are shields. They are carried in one hand by an adventurer while the other hand is holding a weapon or casting a spell. All races and classes are able to use shields, though some factions do not typically use them. Ranged fighters, for example, do not typically carry any shields at all, though they may use heavy bracers that provide a very small degree of the same protection provided by bucklers and various shields.
